Official training in the effective treatment of severe trauma victims in the pre hospital phase.
NAEMT's PHTLS course is accepted around the globe as the leading continuing education program for prehospital emergency trauma care.
The goal of PHTLS is to promote excellence in trauma patient care, and in turn, improve the quality of treatment and decrease mortality in the prehospital phase. Its core philosophy stresses the treatment of the multi-system trauma patient, as a unique entity with its own specific needs, and promotes critical thinking as the foundation for providing quality care.
PHTLS was developed by NAEMT in cooperation with the American College of Surgeons' Committee on Trauma. The Committee provides the medical direction and content oversight for the PHTLS program.

The course is conducted over 2 days, beginning with theoretical training, and then progressing into skills stations to offer practical hands on training. The last day of the course includes a written exam, and simulated drills using high fidelity manikins and special effects to create lifelike scenarios.

Trainees who successfully complete the course will receive a formal PHTLS certificate from NAEMT.
